PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT

TEMPORARY FULL-TIME  (CONTRACT TO PERMANENT)

The Physician Assistant will work to improve medical services access to patients in a timely manner by decreasing wait times to see a health professional, conducting select patient assessments, prescribe medications and assist in procedures to create better access for the patients served.  The Physician Assistant will apply medical techniques and principles under the direction of a Physician and will deal with a diverse set of patients.

Qualifications:  The Physician Assistant is a graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant Program, Certified as a Physician Assistant by the Canadian Association of Physician Assistants (CAPA), Current BCLS preferred.  Minimum of 3 – 5 years experience in a primary health care setting or related environment is an asset. Knowledge and experience working in collaboration with community health organizations to promote health and well-being programs is an asset. As a condition of employment, a vulnerable sector police clearance is required and you are required to submit proof of COVID-19 vaccination.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Job Title:  Physician Assistant

Reports to:  The Executive Director

Status:  Temporary Full-Time (contract to permanent)

Date:    May 2024

Summary:

Under the direction of the members of our physician group, the Physician Assistant will work to improve medical services access to patients in a timely manner by decreasing wait times to see a health professional, conducting select patient assessments, prescribe medications and assist in procedures to create better access for the patients served.  The Physician Assistant will apply medical techniques and principles under the direction of a Physician and will deal with a diverse set of patients. 

Accountability:

This position reports to the Executive Director.

Duties and Responsibilities:

While working with a physician, the role of Physician Assistant would include but not limited to:

  • Perform complete clinical assessments of patients and formulate treatment plans
  • Conduct interview, physical assessments, and interpret findings
  • Order and complete preliminary interpretation of diagnostic tests
  • Assisting the physician with management of complex patients
  • Performing certain acts under medical directives, delegated by the physician
  • Counseling patients on health promotion and preventative health care
  • Communicate and also when appropriate refer patients to other members of the health professionals and hospital departments, for services outside of the Physician Assistant’s scope of practice
  • Make clear, accurate and appropriate records of the patient care plan
  • Maintain the knowledge and be proficient in current evidence-based methods and practices of primary care guidelines
  • Willingness to fill out appropriate documentations and forms required by various third parties
  • Must be proficient in using computer and Electronic Medical Records
  • Willingness to teach and train other members of the team including medical students, PA students and medical residents as required. 

Minimum Education Requirements:

  • Graduate of an Accredited Physician Assistant Program
  • Certified as a Physician Assistant by the Canadian Association of Physician Assistants (CAPA)
  • Current BCLS preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

  • Knowledge and experience working in collaboration with community health organizations to promote health and well-being programs.
  • Strong organization and time management skills
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills; high level of independent decision-making required
  • Computer experience a strong asset
  • Excellence in patient service, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively and independently in an interdisciplinary team
  • Willingness and ability to expand with role as required
  • Familiar with EMR, Accuro (preferred)

Conditions of Employment:

  • As a condition of employment, you are required to submit proof of COVID-19 vaccination
  • May be required to obtain additional vaccinations as deemed appropriate by the TDFHT

  • Will be required to offer at least one daytime and evening shift
  • Will be required to work onsite
